Welcome to the IGERT Program's Page
Language science is a strategic priority for the University of Maryland, and the university boasts one of the largest and most well- integrated language research communities in the US, spread across many departments, colleges, and research centers. Our modest goal is to make Maryland an international leader across all areas of language science, and to create a nationally visible model of integration across the different areas of language science (cognitive, computational, neuroscientific, educational, clinical, engineering, etc.).
Our NSF-IGERT graduate program in "Biological and Computational
Foundations of Language Diversity" (2008-2013) is the first such award
at the University of Maryland, and the aims of this interdisciplinary
graduate program are:
(i) Create an integrated graduate program that enables students to do
innovative research that would be impossible within an individual
department [i.e., the standard objective of an IGERT program]
(ii) Use the program as a catalyst for strengthening the Maryland
language science research enterprise more generally [the strategic part]
(iii) Use lessons learned from the program to position the University
of Maryland to secure similar awards in other areas [the institutional
impact]
