What is Language Science Day?

The University of Maryland hosts arguably the largest and most integrated community of language scientists in North America. Language Science Day aims to bring together the cross-departmental community of language science students and faculty to improve awareness of the rich opportunities for language science at the University of Maryland. The goal is to showcase research activities and opportunities, to make students aware of training possibilities, and to jump-start potential interdisciplinary connections. This is the second annual Language Science Day.

The event will begin with a catered lunch, followed by a series of short presentations about research and training resources available to language scientists at Maryland. The rest of the afternoon will be devoted to the Research Fair, during which research groups from around campus will be able to share their research goals and recent work. We hope the informal set-up will allow participants to find new opportunities and connect with other researchers that share their interests.

Language Science Day hopes to include all areas of language science, including cognitive, computational, engineering, clinical, theoretical, philosophical, biological, and educational approaches.

Language Science Day is sponsored by the NSF-IGERT program on the Biological and Computational Foundations of Language Diversity, the Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), the Department of Linguistics, the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology, the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program, the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Psychology, the Second Language Acquisition Program, the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), and the Graduate Student Government. The event is being organized by students in the IGERT program.

What is the Language Science Research Fair?

The goal of the Research Fair is not so much to communicate recent results as to communicate research goals and opportunities for interdisciplinary connections. We hope that both students and faculty will learn about research activities in other departments that they may not have encountered otherwise, whether or not they are new to the university.

How will the Research Fair be organized?

The Research Fair will be divided into two hour-long sessions. Each session will include groups from diverse areas. We hope this will allow everyone sufficient time to circulate and interact with different participants.

Due to the large interest in the event, we won't be able to accommodate a poster for every individual. We ask that groups coordinate to present their interests more generally. The "groups" could be pre-existing labs or more informal groups of collaborators.

Research groups are welcome to bring a representative conference poster or handout, or create something new that summarizes their work more generally. We ask that groups self-organize and plan to present material that will give a broad audience an understanding of their work. "Groups" is an intentionally vague term: it covers existing lab groups, or ad hoc clusters of researchers with related interests, and individuals working independently can organize themselves into a group of one! We are open to suggestions — please indicate in the Research Fair registration form what you would like to present, and please contact the organizers if you have questions.

How can my group participate?

To let us know that you'd like your group to participate in the Research Fair, please register yourself or your group at the Group Registration page by Monday, September 12, 2011. We ask that just one contact person register for each group. After you've registered, someone from the organizing committee will contact you with further information as it becomes available. A schedule of the Research Fair sessions will be released in early September.

Register your group.
